After a big pancake breakfast in Fontana (come on, I had buttermilk in the fridge that needed to be used!), we headed out. It was about a four-hour drive to Kernville. I slept part of the way, and managed to break the table in the RV (turns out it's not a load-bearing structure), but we made it just fine with plenty of time to explore some of the town and river. Not too many pics today, sorry.
Person:
The people in Kernville are very friendly so far, and we've had conversations with several locals. Probably my favorite was a guy that sat down at our table at dinner (it was a picnic bench, and his friends were at the adjacent table) and struck up a conversation with us. He was a young guy, about my age or so, and had grown up in the mobile home park just next to our campsite. He somehow ended up with what sounded like a southern accent despite having grown up in California, which probably speaks to just how much of a small-town atmosphere there is around here.
Place:
We made quite a find for dinner. We went to the Kern River Brewing Company (KRBC), where they welcomed our dogs to outdoor seating and served up some delicious beers and food. There was also a great bluegrass band playing inside (though I only got to enjoy them on a trip to the bathroom). I was struck again by the small-town atmosphere as we ate, seeing numerous people come and visit with the party next to us, several of whom simply sat down at the table and ordered. The weather here is gorgeous too, and it was an all-around enjoyable evening.
Food:
I had the Class V Stout at KRBC that I found quite delicious. They described it as a combination of an oatmeal stout, a milk stout, and an Imperial Russion Stout, and it delivered. Great dry-type flavors of bitter chocolate and coffee, and a lot of deep malt character. This was definitely the highlight of their beer selection.
